AND... cream and mascara products are the only ones you have to keep an eye on for rancidity, we learnt in makeup school that the whole throw out your makeup every once in a while is only -the most- transparent marketing ploy to encourage you to spend money on new products.
Really you don't need to throw out all your make-up that often. Especially creams unless you don't care good care of them and double dip.
Scoop a little out with a palette knife and warm it up on the back of your hand. If you don't have enough clean the spatula with a alcohol wipe and get some more. store cream products in a cool dry place where the temperature and humidity doesn't rapidly change and you'll be fine.
Give it a sniff once in a while and if smells off or looks weird or its different when you apply chuck it. Otherwise its fine. The preservatives in make-up are great.
Mascaras are a different story, but again double dipping plays a big role in this. ~8 weeks

Yes but this is Kai we're talking about, lol. She double dips and sticks her fingers in everything. She has lipsticks and lipglosses from 2007 and back. Mac lipglasses tend to smell like rancid plastic when they've gone bad. I remember Kai mentioning one of hers smelled "weird"... It was definitely time to throw that sucker out.
